World Wetlands Day 2001: Nigeria

Hi, This is a brief from the wetlands desk at the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF). We organised a "wetlands open day" and it was held at the Lekki Conservation Centre in Lagos. There were about 100 students from Universities and Secondary schools in attendance and they were given lectures ranging from an overview of Ramsar and Wetlands, Mangroves, Sea Turtles, Waterbirds, and Communicating wetlands. These lectures were given by eperts from NCF and the academia.
It was great working with the students especially hearing what they know about wetlands. We also had an exhibition on wetlands which was well appreciated. It is an awareness creating concept necesitated by the need for the youths to be aware of what Nigeria stands to gain from joining Ramsar and what is expected of us as individuals and the nation in general.
It is expected that we would hold this event yearly. I hope it went well in the rest of the network.
Thanks.
