World Wetlands Day 2001: Estonia
Report the Ramsar Bureau. 2001-02-09
The Estonian Society for Nature Conservation (ESNC) have conducted two events devoted to the 30th anniversary of the Ramsar Convention - a conference in Feb. 2nd and an evening meeting for wide public in Feb.5th.
The conference was organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Estonian National Ramsar Committee. The main attention was paid to the history, present situation and to the future of the Convention in Estonia. Also were made presentation about the trends of world climate.
Besides the items of agenda the participants had a walking-tour to the renewed plant for wastewater treatment of Tallinn, which leads the cleaned wastewater of almost whole town directly into the Finnish gulf. During this short field trip was handled also the environmental impact of relatively huge territory of the enterprise to the coastal area.
The evening meeting was organised together with the magazine "Loodus" (Nature). The meeting had great success - more than 350 participants. The posters and stickers of the Ramsar Bureau (thank you for quick sending!) were very popular and helped to create a good milieu to the audience.
The ESNC have got an idea to establish a special branch dealing with wetland issues. We will do that provided we will succeed to raise relevant funding. The area of the wetlands in Estonia extends about ¼ of all territory. There are 11 Ramsar areas and 14 are waiting for obtaining of this status. During recent years the public awareness and interest to the wetlands are significantly risen.
