World Wetlands Day 1998 in the Philippines

WWD posterWhat is World Wetlands Day? At the 19th meeting of the Standing Committee, in late October 1996, World Wetlands Day was officially designated for 2 February of every year, the anniversary of the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, as an opportunity for governments, organizations, and citizens to undertake big and small actions intended to raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular.

This page is part of a series of reports on activities held on and about WWD '98 in various countries of the world, as reported to the Bureau.  If you should know of any other activities not mentioned on these pages, send us a note ( and we'll add it to this list.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources
Quezon Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City

We are pleased to submit to the Bureau a report on the activities of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources relative to the observance of the World Wetlands Day in February 1998.

As presented in the attached matrix and photo documentary, a combination of exhibits, lectures, symposia, clean-up drives, and field exposures to nearby wetlands were undertaken. Regional Offices were also able to negotiate press releases, TV coverage, and radio plugs for live interviews and feature stories on wetlands.

At the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau, activities included the distribution of World Wetland Day posters and other information materials for the Regional Offices and general public and negotiation for press releases in the vanous dailies. Several meetings were held in the month of February with concerned government agencies and non-govemment organizations’ representatives for the formation of a group of wetland workers and advocates in the country. A Society for the Conservation of Philippine Wetlands was eventually organized and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It is expected that such a group will be a future active partner of the Department in the advocacy works and implementation of the vanous plans and programs on wetlands, particularly the Philippine Wetland Action Plan.

With my best regards.

Very truly yours,

Wilfrido S. Pollisco, Director
