Action on Ecological Awareness
"World Wetlands Day"
02.02.2007
Primorsk District has been chosen for this nature-conservative action, as within its borders it is located a wetland of international importance "Obitochnyy Bay and Obitochnaya Spit". In 2006 the management-plan for this wetland was developed under the financial support of the Netherlands Embassy in Ukraine (the header of project is the Deputy Director of Scientific-Research Institute of Biodiversity of Land and Water Ecosystems of Ukraine V.D.Siokhin). Among developers there were scientists of Melitopol State Pedagogical University, Scientific-Research Institute of Biodiversity of Land and Water Ecosystems of Ukraine.
Long-term management solutions and nature protection are not possible to realize without support of local population. Understanding this fact, Melitopol State Pedagogical University, Scientific-Research Institute of Biodiversity of Land and Water Ecosystems of Ukraine, Regional Pedagogical Lyceum "Tvorchestvo", and Non-Governmental Ecological Organization "Laguna" have performed Action on Ecological Awareness at the base of a city school in this district.
Among invited persons there were city authorities, headmasters of schools and teachers of Biology of other city schools, pupils of other schools, and students of Agricultural Technical School. Regional and national press and TV highlighted the event.
The following activities were carried out:

1. Thematic lesson for senior pupils "Present and Future of the Reserved Wetland "Obitochnyy Bay and Obitochnaya Spit" by a teacher of the regional lyceum I.N.Petrova

2. Extracurricular ecological lesson "Along Untrodden Paths in the Neighbourhood" by senior researcher of the Azov-Black Sea Ornithological Station R.N.Chernichko.
3. "The origin of World Wetlands Day and Ramsar Convention" by Director of the Azov-Black Sea Ornithological Station, Deputy Director of Scientific-Research Institute of Biodiversity of Land and Water Ecosystems of Ukraine, leading researcher I.I.Chernichko
4. "Obitochnyy Bay and Obitochnaya Spit - a Jewel of Priazovie"- presentation of the wetland of international importance by the Deputy Director of Scientific-Research Institute of Biodiversity of Land and Water Ecosystems of Ukraine V.D. Siokhin

5. Thematic compositions of Mozart and Tariverdiyev performing by the student's choir of violinists
For the Action there have been prepared:

- audioclips and videofilms (including authoring works);
- compact disc with material
Schoolchildren with pleasure participated in the Action, and teachers received methodic materials to carry out similar activities in future.
