World Wetlands Day 2008 -- Bangladesh

The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Society (NBCS) has celebrated World Wetlands Day 2008 successfully through seminar, essay competition and presentation ceremony, campaign and distribute message of Secretary general (Ramsar Conventation on Wetlands), T-shirts distribution and making a documentary on Sundarbans Mangrove.

This year NBCS has celebrated WWD 2008 in 3 important districts (Dhaka, Khulna and Bagerhat) and organized large-scale programs in Bangladesh. These 3 parts are important for wetland values both ecologically and economically and essential for wetland conservation. NBCS has promoted and involved different GO, NGO, local community and different level of people to celebrate World Wetlands Day 2008. NBCS organized WWD 2008 programs jointly with Thengamara Mohila Sabuj Sangha (TMSS) and World Peace Mission, Bangladesh (WPM).

1.WWD2008 in Dhaka (Capital City of Bangladesh)

NBCS has celebrated WWD 2008 through seminar at National press club in Dhaka on 1st February. NBCS has involved other NGO of TMSS and jointly organized the seminar. The seminar topic was "Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People". Muhammad Shariful Islam, President of NBCS presided over the seminar. The seminar was address by former Chairman of Privatization Commission (Minister of State), Enam Ahmed Chaudhury as the Chief Guest. Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Chief Editor and Managing Director Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury, Water Resources Planning Organization, Bangladesh, Director General Inamul Haque, World Peace Mission Chairman, Dr. Kamal Kumar Saha and TMSS Director, AKM Fazlul Haque address the seminar as Special Guest.

Water Resources Planning Organization Director General, Inamul Haque, Stamford University Civil Engineering Department Chairman Prof Dr M Zahurul Islam and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Civil and Environmental Engineering Departmental Head Dr. Mohammad Aktarul Islam Chowdhury (Key note Speaker) presented papers on the seminar.

The speakers said sound wetlands could contribute to a healthy and sustainable economic condition. Therefore, the wetlands should be utilized for welfare of the people by protecting those from ruination and preserving biodiversity through proper and time-befitting work plans.

Chief Guest Enam Ahmed Chaudhury said a coordinated plan would have to be adopted for preservation of wetlands and natural resources. Step should be taken at the state level and awareness created among the people of all strata on the issue to get international recognition, he said and added international cooperation is also required for preservation of biodiversity.

Muhammad Shariful Islam said for ensuring healthy wetlands GO, NGO and different level of people should work together. He also said build up strong platform both national and international level and exchange knowledge and technology for wetlands conservation and its wise use. He thanks to Ramsar Bureau and specially thanks to Secretary General, Anada Tiega, Ramsar Convention on wetlands for encouraging and supporting.

Teachers, students, wetlands specialists, environmentalists, journalists and different level of people attained the seminar. National TV media telecast the program and newspaper coverage this program.

2. WWD 2008 in Khulna (Region of Sundarbans Mangrove)

NBCS has successfully celebrated WWD 2008 in Mangrove region of Khulna through seminar, essay competition and presentation ceremony and distribution of T-shirts.

NBCS jointly organized seminar with World peace Mission (WPM) at Khulna Press club on 14 February. Muhammad Shariful Islam, president of NBCS presided over the seminar. City mayor of Khulna, Md. Moniruzzaman Moni was the Chief guest. President of Khulna press club Wadodur Rahman Panna, Chairman, World Peace Mission Dr. Kamal Kumar Saha were as the Special guest. Two seminar papers were presented in the seminar. Representative of GO, NGO, local community, journalists, environmentalists, teachers and students were attained in the seminar.

NBCS and WPM jointly organized the Essay completion and presentation ceremony on 16 February in Local Women College (Muhosin Women College) of Khulna. More over 60 students were participated in the essay competition. Presentation ceremony and symposium programs were organized after the essay competition at College auditorium. Symposium and presentation ceremony program presided over by NBCS president. Additional District Commission (Land) of Khulna was as the Chief guest and WPM president was as the special guest. Students, teachers. Local community, Journalists were attained these programs. National TV and News paper coverage these programs.

3. WWD2008 in Bagerhat (Sundarbans Mangrove)

NBCS and WPM jointly organized the campaign in Sudarbans Mangrove on the occasion of WWD 2008 on 17 February. Visiting Sidar affected area and interviewing the local community people, distributing T-shirts and making a short documentary on Sundarbans Mangrove.
