World Wetlands Day 2008 in Turkey
Dr.B.Teoman MERIC who is Ramsar Government Focal Point of Turkey, Serhan CAGIRANKAYA who is Ramsar CEPA Government Focal Point (Agricultural Engineer) and Elif OKUMUS (Environmental Engineer (MSc)) is Deputy Expert in Ministry of Environment and Forestry, General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, Wetlands Division, are reporting 2008 WWD activities in Turkey. Since 2006, WWD hadn't been celebrated because of Bird Flu disaster in Turkey. Finally, 2008 WWD was celebrated in Burdur City which has Burdur Lake that one of the 12 Ramsar Sites of Turkey.
Within the celebrations, the drawing and composition competitions had been arranged for elementary school students in the concept of "Importance of 2nd February WWD". On the other hand, leaflets, posters about Burdur Bird Paradise, WWD and Wetlands of Burdur have been delivered to all participants. First of all, the Opening Ceremony of Burdur Bird Paradise has taken. Then the Celebrations of WWD started with the speeches of Mr. Prof.Dr. Veysel EROGLU who is the Minister of Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Governor of Burdur and General Director of Nature Conservation and National Parks. After speeches, PowerPoint presentation which was prepared by Wetlands Division (in the background of presentation there was a Turkish Folk Music and Photographs from Turkey's wetlands) about Wetlands of Turkey and Wetlands' Functions and Values had been showed to participants and also media. The Celebrations had come to end with the presentation of Wetland Management Plan of Burdur Lake by Mr. Yusuf CERAN who is the Chief of the Wetlands Division. All events were passed in festival mood and all people had more interest about activities.
