The U.S. Ambassador in Ecuador celebrates World Wetlands Day by the Antisana volcano

The Antisana volcano, the main attraction within the Antisana Ecological Reserve in the Andean region of Ecuador, South America, showed itself in full view last 2nd of February during the World Wetlands Day (WWD) ceremony. Nearly forty people including U.S. ambassador in Ecuador, Kristie Kenney attended the signing of a historical agreement: a contract of compromise among major land owners, Fundación Antisana and members of neighbouring communities to work together towards the conservation of the area. The Antisana Ecological Reserve is located to the south east of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, in the eastern slopes of the Andes. The reserve is surrounded by large private properties and two community settlements that conduct productive activities such as cattle grazing and agriculture. These practices have proven damaging for the environment and the conservation of wetlands within the reserve, so the Ecuadorian conservationist organization, Fundación Antisana will devise a management plan to work with land owners and communities and get the use of natural resources organized. On WWD, the U.S. Ambassador signed the conservation agreement as honorary witness along with the rest of the parties.
