A Ramsar virtual community for wetlands
Thanks to support from the Danone Group and the Evian brand, a collaborative platform has been established to facilitate information-sharing and exchange on wetlands among the public at large.
1. Online photo gallery
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Convention, in 2011 the Secretariat created an online gallery, a testimony to the beauty of the planet’s wetlands. The gallery already has over 350 photographs showing the wealth and diversity of wetlands. Take a look!
2. Interactive guided tour of 14 Ramsar Sites around the world
Ramsar chose wetlands, tourism and leisure as its theme for 2012. In addition to the material created for WWD, the Ramsar Secretariat and the UN World Tourism Organization launched a publication which highlights the considerable value of wetlands for tourism and the economic benefits that the latter can bring to the management of wetland sites. More on the publication here.
In order to facilitate exchanges on this theme, an interactive space has been developed for the Ramsar community. In addition to offering more information about sustainable tourism in wetland zones, it also offers a virtual tour of 14 exceptional sites, 13 of them Ramsar Sites. These journeys through the world’s wetlands sites have been specially selected to showcase the different categories of wetlands and to demonstrate their diversity for tourism, the management processes in place, the challenges they face and, where possible, the management solutions adopted by way of response.
3. Official Facebook page of the Ramsar Convention
In 2011, the Convention created its official Facebook page. Thanks to informed advice from Danone, the Ramsar Convention Secretariat is now successfully attracting the attention of the general public and facilitating exchange on issues both closely and not so closely related to wetlands, the environment and the work of the Ramsar Convention.
