Overview of the Danone-Evian partnership
“The only way that gives hope of a better future
is the one of cooperation and partnership”
Kofi Annan, 2001 .
Why a partnership with the private sector?
Involving all stakeholders in order to better protect the environment has become more and more important over the years. Since 1992 and Rio Summit for Sustainable Development, the participation of all stakeholders has been underlined as a priority to reach a sustainable protection and behavior. It is only through the involvement and participation of every sector that we will manage to change behavior and develop a wise use of our resources.
The Ramsar Convention is supporting this vision and the private sector partnership with the Danone Group has allowed the Convention to develop important activities to implement its Strategic Plan and make the Convention more efficient.
Ramsar was the first international convention to develop a partnership with the private sector more than ten years ago.
The relationship helps Ramsar to fulfill its mission by, for example, allowing us to develop a better management and wise use of water and wetlands throughout the world. It also helps Ramsar to enhance international cooperation through meetings and seminars and by developing a network for supporting regional initiatives.
Thanks to this private funding assistance, the Ramsar Convention and our wise-use message have become better known and awareness has been raised at all levels from local to international, including amongst the private sector itself.
All of these reasons have led Ramsar Contracting Parties to develop a new Resolution at the 10th meeting of the Contracting Parties (Changwon, 2008). Resolution X.12, Principles for partnerships between the Ramsar Convention and the business sector”, was adopted by the Parties with a unanimous consensus and should help Ramsar to strengthen this kind of mutually-beneficial relationship with the business sector.
