It was a great honor for me to win the Ramsar Scientific Award in 2005. I heartily thank the Ramsar Convention for awarding me such a special honor, which is not only the reward of my work these years but also brings me many opportunities and challenges.

In recent years, I have proposed some concrete advice on Lake Hong in Hubei province and on Dajiu Lake's wetland restoration and protection in order to convince the State and Provincial government to invest 70 million renminbi on it - remarkable results have been achieved, such as the improvement of the water quality of Lake Hong from IV-V to II-III (GB3838-2002, II is drinkable); the increase of aquatic plant coverage in Lake Hong to 80%; the return of more than 100,000 waterbirds again every year; and the increase of the wetland area of Dajiu Lake by 50%.

I also promoted legislation on Hubei wetland protection. I donated the Ramsar Award prize to found the Wetland Protection Fund, which got full-stream support from the Hubei provincial government who offered an additional 3 million RMB for it. Moreover, I actively jointed various TV programmes on "prizewinners' experiences" and "implementation of the national wetland protection plan", both at local level and national level, to strengthen wetland protection and raise public awareness.

Fue un gran honor para mí ganar el Premio Ramsar en la categoría de ciencia en 2005. Agradezco sinceramente a la Convención de Ramsar por concederme un honor tan especial, que no es sólo un reconocimiento a mi labor durante estos años sino que al mismo tiempo me brinda muchas oportunidades y desafíos.

En los últimos años, he propuesto algunas recomendaciones concretas sobre el Lago Hong, en la provincia de Hubei, y sobre la restauración y protección del humedal del Lago Dajiu, a fin de convencer a las autoridades estatales y al gobierno provincial de que invirtiesen 70 millones de yuanes renminbi en ellos; se han conseguido resultados notables, como la mejora de la calidad del agua del Lago Hong, pasando del tipo IV-V al II-III en los criterios de calidad medioambiental del agua (GB3838-2) (el criterio GB3838-2002 tipo II es agua potable), el aumento de la cobertura de plantas acuáticas en el Lago Hong hasta el 80%, el retorno de más de 100.000 aves acuáticas cada año y el aumento del área del humedal del Lago Dajiu en un 50%.

He promovido asimismo legislación en materia de protección del humedal de Hubei. He donado el Premio Ramsar al Fondo de Protección de los Humedales, que ha conseguido un apoyo pleno del gobierno provincial de Hubei, que ha ofrecido 3 millones de yuanes renminbi adicionales para dicho fondo. Además, he participado activamente en varios programas de televisión sobre "experiencias de los premiados" y sobre "implementación del plan nacional de protección de los humedales", tanto a nivel local como nacional, para fortalecer la protección de los humedales y aumentar la concienciación del público.

Ce fut, pour moi, un grand honneur, de recevoir le Prix Ramsar pour la science, en 2005. Je remercie la Convention de Ramsar du fond du cœur de m'avoir fait un tel honneur. Ce n'est pas seulement une récompense pour mes travaux de ces dernières années : ce prix m'a apporté beaucoup de possibilités et de défis.

Récemment, j'ai proposé des avis concrets concernant le lac Hong dans la province de Hubei et la restauration et la protection des zones humides du lac Dajiu en vue de convaincre les gouvernements de l'État et de la province d'investir 70 millions de renminbi - nous avons obtenu des résultats remarquables tels que l'amélioration de la qualité de l'eau du lac Hong de IV-V à II-III (GB3838-2002, II indique une eau potable) ; l'augmentation de la couverture du lac Hong en plantes aquatiques jusqu'à 80 % ; le retour de plus de 100 000 oiseaux d'eau chaque année ; et l'augmentation de 50 % du secteur des zones humides du lac Dajiu.

J'ai également promu une législation pour la protection des zones humides de la province de Hubei. J'ai fait don du prix associé au Prix Ramsar pour la fondation du Fonds pour la protection des zones humides qui a reçu l'appui plein et entier du gouvernement provincial de Hubei, lequel a offert RMB 3 millions supplémentaires. En outre, j'ai participé activement à différents programmes télévisés sur les expériences de lauréats de prix et la mise en œuvre du plan national de protection des zones humides, que ce soit au niveau local ou au niveau national, en vue de renforcer la protection des zones humides et de sensibiliser le public.
