Un nouveau site Ramsar inscrit par le Paraguay dans le Chaco

Le 14 juillet 2004, la Laguna Teniente Rojas Silva (dans le département de Boquerón) a rejoint Laguna Chaco Lodge (inscrit en octobre 2003) sur la Liste de Ramsar, en devenant le 6e site Ramsar du Paraguay. La Fundación DeSdelChaco a joué un rôle insigne en apportant son appui à cette inscription et en préparant la Fiche descriptive Ramsar. Comme le décrit Iván Dario Valencia du Secrétariat Ramsar, d'après la Fiche descriptive Ramsar, la Laguna Teniente Rojas Silva (8470 hectares, 22°38'S - 59°03'O) fait partie du bassin versant du Riacho Yakaré Sur, dans le Chaco paraguayen et alterne entre des conditions d'eau douce et d'eau saumâtre. On y trouve des colonies de massettes Typha dominguensis, de laitue d'eau Pistia stratiotes et d'Hynenachne amplexicaulis, dans un paysage de forêts xérophytes, de forêts subhumides, de buissons et de forêts saisonnièrement inondés et de savane. Le site abrite plusieurs espèces protégées et en danger telles que le nandou d'Amérique Rhea americana, le coscoroba blanc Coscoroba coscoroba, le flamant du Chili Phoenicopterus chilensis, la loutre géante du Brésil Pteronura brasiliensis et le tatou à trois bandes Tolypeutes matacus. L'arbuste indigène Lophocarpinia aculeatifolia et le jacaré Caiman yacare sont d'autres espèces remarquables que l'on peut voir dans le site. Celui-ci fait partie d'un domaine privé dont les propriétaires sont très concernés par la conservation de la nature. Une agriculture et un élevage à petite échelle ainsi d'une chasse locale sont pratiqués dans le site par la population autochtone mais les principales menaces sont la salinisation et la désertification que l'on peut déjà constater dans les zones environnantes. Tras la inclusion de la Laguna Chaco Lodge en la Lista de Humedales de Importancia Internacional en octubre de 2003, la Laguna Teniente Rojas Silva se convierte en el sexto sitio Ramsar de Paraguay. La Fundación DeSdelChaco apoyó la designación y elaboró la Ficha Informativa Ramsar.

Laguna Teniente Rojas Silva. 14/07/04; Boquerón; 8,470 ha.; 22º38’S, 059º03’W. Reserva privada. Parte de la cuenca del Riacho Yakaré Sur en el Chaco paraguayo, esta laguna alterna entre condiciones de agua dulce y salada y alberga colonias de totora Typha dominguensis, llantén de agua Pistia stratiotes y camalotillo Hymenachne amplexicaulis; en medio de un paisaje de bosque xerofítico, bosque subhúmedo, bosques y matorrales inundables y sabanas de espartillares. El sitio es refugio de varias especies protegidas y/o amenazadas como el ñandú Rhea americana, el cisne coscoroba Coscoroba coscoroba, el flamenco chileno Phoenicopterus chilensis, el lobo de río Pteronura brasiliensis y el armadillo de tres bandas Tolypeutes matacus. El arbusto propio de los salares Lophocarpinia aculeatifolia y el yacaré Caiman yacare son otras especies presentes a resaltar. El área hace parte de una estancia privada cuyos dueños están comprometidos con la conservación de los humedales. Los usos humanos primordiales son la agricultura a pequeña escala y la ganadería, así como la caza localizada por comunidades indígenas. Las mayores amenazadas son la salinización y la desertificación, las cuales ya han afectado áreas vecinas.

Paraguay designates another Ramsar Site in the Chaco

Following Laguna Chaco Lodge, listed in october 2003, Laguna Teniente Rojas Silva in Boquerón department joins the Ramsar List as of 14 July 2004 as the 6th Ramsar Site in the country. Fundación DeSdelChaco was instrumental in supporting the designation and preparing the Ramsar Information Sheet. As described by Ramsar's Iván Dario Valencia, based upon the Ramsar Information Sheet, the Laguna Teniente Rojas Silva (8,470 hectares, 22º38’S 059º03’W). is part of the watershed of the Riacho Yakaré Sur in the Paraguayan Chaco and alternates between freshwater and brackish conditions. It supports colonies of Southern cattail Typha dominguensis, Tropical duck-weed Pistia stratiotes and West Indian marsh grass Hymenachne amplexicaulis, amidst a landscape of xerophytic forest, subhumid forest, seasonally flooded shrubs and forests and savannah. The site hosts several endangered and protected species such as the greater Rhea Rhea americana, the Coscoroba Swan Coscoroba coscoroba, the Chilean Flamingo Phoenicopterus chilensis, the Giant Brazilian Otter Pteronura brasiliensis and the Southern Three-Banded Armadillo Tolypeutes matacus. The indigenous shrub Lophocarpinia aculeatifolia and the Jacare Caiman yacare are other noteworthy species of the site. The area is part of a private estate whose owners are committed to wetland conservation. Small scaled agriculture and cattle ranching, as well as local hunting by indigenous people, are the main human uses of the site, while its greatest threats are salinisation and desertification, which have already occurred in neighboring areas.
