Antigua y Barbuda se adhiere a la Convención de Ramsar
La
Secretaría tiene sumo gusto en informar de que el Estado caribeño
de Antigua y Barbuda ha finalizado
los trámites de adhesión y ha pasado a ser la 146ª
Parte Contratante de la Convención sobre los Humedales. Como la
UNESCO recibió la documentación pertinente el 2 de junio,
la Convención entrará en vigor para Antigua y Barbuda el
2 de octubre de 2005. El primer Humedal de Importancia Internacional que
la nueva Parte debe designar obligatoriamente es la Laguna
de Codrington, situada en Barbuda. Aunque todavía no
se ha recibido la correspondiente Ficha Informativa de Ramsar, según
la obra A Directory of Neotropical Wetlands de Derek Scott y Montserrat
Carbonell (UICN e IWRB, 1986), la laguna de Codrington (17º40'N,
061º51'O) era entonces "una gran laguna salina de 2.650 hectáreas,
separada del mar por una barra de arena y con una estrecha conexión
con el océano en su extremo septentrional; en ella hay varias islitas,
unas 900 hectáreas de pantanos con manglares… y ciénagas
salobres a salinas conexas. […] Se sabe que en la zona abundan las
aves acuáticas, especialmente las Ardeidae, aves de ribera migratorias
y las Laridae. […] En las playas adyacentes anidan tortugas marinas
y en la laguna existe una importante pesquería de langostas".
Una bienvenida muy
cálida a Antigua y Barbuda en la "familia de Ramsar".

Secrétariat est heureux d'annoncer que l'État caraïbe
d'Antigua et Barbuda, en terminant
ses formalités d'adhésion, est devenu la 146e Partie contractante
à la Convention sur les zones humides. L'UNESCO a reçu les
documents requis le 2 juin : la Convention entrera en vigueur le 2 octobre
2005 pour Antigua et Barbuda. Remplissant son obligation d'inscrire une
première zone humide d'importance internationale, la nouvelle Partie
contractante a désigné "Codington
Lagoon" sur Barbuda. La Fiche descriptive Ramsar ne nous
est pas encore parvenue mais, selon le Directory of Neotropical Wetlands
(Derek Scott et Montserrat Carbonell, UICN et BIROE, 1986), Codrington
Lagoon (17°40'N-61°51'O) était, à l'époque,
" un grand lagon salin de 2650 hectares, fermé par une barre
de sable mais néanmoins relié à la mer par un étroit
canal à son extrémité nord ; on y trouve plusieurs
îlots, environ 900 hectares de marécages à mangroves….
Et des marais saumâtres à salés… La zone est
connue pour ses riches populations d'oiseaux d'eau, notamment des Ardeidae,
des limicoles migrateurs et des Laridae… Des tortues marines nichent
sur les plages voisines et, dans le lagon, il y a une pêche importante
à la langouste. "

Antigua and Barbuda joins the Ramsar Convention
The
Secretariat is delighted to report that the Caribbean state of Antigua
and Barbuda has completed the accession procedure and joined
the Convention on Wetlands as its 146th Contracting Party. As UNESCO received
the required documents on 2 June, the Convention will enter into force
for Antigua and Barbuda on 2 October 2005. The new Party's obligatory
first Wetland of International Importance has been designated as "Codrington
Lagoon" in Barbuda - although the accompanying Ramsar
Information Sheet has not yet been received, according to Derek Scott
and Montserrat Carbonell, A Directory of Neotropical Wetlands (IUCN
and IWRB, 1986) Codrington Lagoon (17°40'N 061°51'W) at that time
could be described as "a large saline lagoon of 2,650 hectares, separated
from the sea by a sand barrier and with a narrow connection to the sea
at its north end; there are several small islands in the lagoon, about
900 hectares of mangrove swamps . . . and associated brackish to saline
marshes. . . . The area is known to be very rich in waterfowl, particularly
Ardeidae, migratory shorebirds and Laridae. . . . Sea turtles nest on
the adjacent beaches, and there is an important lobster fishery in the
lagoon."
Antigua and Barbuda is warmly welcomed to the "Ramsar family".
